At 3.1 miles the 5K is the first race for most new runners, the family option next to a marathon and the reason so many people are up early on Thanksgiving morning. The fastest are done in under 15 minutes, most of the field jogs and walks home in 30 to 40 minutes, and either counts as a finish. Any event with a 5K on its program is listed here, whether the 5K is the main event or the warm-up act for a half marathon the next day. That covers turkey trots, color runs, charity 5Ks raising money for a hospital or a food bank, school fundraisers with a fun run for the kids, and the Saturday 5Ks that open the big marathon weekends. Well-known 5Ks
The Carlsbad 5000 in Carlsbad, California, each spring is the country's most famous 5K, an out-and-back on Coast Highway 101 that bills itself as the world's fastest. In Boston, the Boston 5K (the former B.A.A. 5K) sends close to 10,000 runners from Boston Common to the marathon finish line on Boylston Street on the Saturday of marathon weekend in April, and in New York the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K runs from the United Nations through Midtown to the marathon finish in Central Park on the Saturday before the marathon each fall. The biggest single day is still Thanksgiving, when turkey trots in nearly every town put more Americans on a race course than any other date.
