West Michigan Latino Health 5K Walk/Run
The West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce organizes a family-oriented 5K walk and run held at Roosevelt Park in Grand Rapids. The event highlights health and wellness promotion with a focus on the Latino community while welcoming participation from all of West Michigan. A Finish Fest at Roosevelt Park includes food, free kids activities, and an awards ceremony.
The event is framed as a response to higher local rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and stroke in the Hispanic community, with emphasis on improving diet and increasing physical activity. Walking the course is permitted, but participants must complete the route within 90 minutes. Weather conditions vary and event directors reserve the right to cancel without refund in case of severe weather.
Volunteer roles are available in multiple positions and time slots; volunteers receive shirts and food and should be prepared to attend a volunteer training session the week of the event. Race shirts are provided to participants 13 and older; shirts for younger participants may be available for purchase. Participants must be present to receive a race bib at packet pick-up.
The event carries a registration fee of $30 and centers on community health education and family participation through organized physical activity. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
