Welsh 5Ks come in two flavours: the flat, chip-timed city races in Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, and the village and coastal runs where the course is whatever the land allows. Cardiff Bay and Bute Park host timed 5Ks through the year, Swansea's promenade along Mumbles Road gives a fast out-and-back, and Race for Life brings big charity fields to Bute Park in Cardiff and to Swansea's parks each year.

What to expect from a Welsh 5k
Welsh Athletics clubs license most of the road races, so a measured course is common even at a small event, and the fields are friendly enough that a first-timer will never finish alone. Summer evening 5Ks along the coast from Llanelli to Aberystwyth are a local speciality, the mountain towns of Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog run 5Ks with real gradient, and the Christmas fancy-dress runs on the promenades see the year out. Junior fun runs often precede the main race, and many Welsh 5Ks set the minimum age low enough for the whole family to enter.
