Freed to Run Challenge - Jacksonville Equestrian Center
The Freed to Run Challenge is the 10th annual edition of a multi-distance running event held in Jacksonville, Florida. The event supports the Shelter for Elders initiative and is led by Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. It is organized by Sombrero Running Events, which states a focus on hospitality and inclusion and follows Rule 62.
The course is a tree lined, all-asphalt out-and-back 5k loop along the Cecil Field Recreational Trail that returns to an area called Tent City where participants may keep tents and gear along the route. All event distances use this same loop.
Distances and formats include:
- 12-hour individual: complete as many 5k loops as possible within 12 hours.
- 12-hour relay: teams of 4 to 6 runners, teammates alternate on the 5k loop.
- 6-hour: complete as many 5k loops as possible within 6 hours.
- 3-hour: complete as many 5k loops as possible within 3 hours.
- 5k Ultra: run a 5k on the hour each hour for 10 consecutive hours.
- 5k Morning: single 5k out-and-back on the same route.
- 5k Evening: single 5k out-and-back on the same route.
All participants receive custom medals and shirts. Overall top three awards are given for each event and distance. Age group awards for the 5k distances are offered when participant numbers meet minimums. Additional special awards are distributed, including a Slow A$$ award for the last finisher.
