Winterlude Triathlon
The Winterlude Triathlon in Ottawa is recognized as the world's oldest winter triathlon, with a history dating back to 1984. Held as part of the city's annual Winterlude Festival, this event features a multi-sport course that utilizes local winter landmarks.
The race is conducted with a mass start format and includes three specific disciplines:
- Skating (8 km) on the Rideau Canal.
- Running (5 km) from Dow's Lake to the Terry Fox Athletic Facility.
- Cross-country skiing (6 km) at Mooney's Bay, finishing at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility.
Participants may use either classic or skate-ski techniques for the skiing portion. Given the environmental factors involved in winter sports, the course route and distances are subject to change based on weather conditions and ice availability on the canal.
Registration includes professional timing, a personalized race bib, race photography, and on-course nutrition. Post-race amenities such as snacks and hot chocolate are provided to participants. Podium prizes are awarded to the top three athletes in the male, female, and non-binary categories. For those requiring gear, ski rentals are available at the Terry Fox Facility. Shuttles are used to transport athletes from the ski equipment drop-off point to the skating start line on the canal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
