Event overview
The Winter Solstice Vertical Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Mount Walker trailhead in Quilcene, WA, within Olympic National Forest. The event returns for its fifth year. It uses a fatass-style format that lets participants run or hike as many laps as they choose. Nutrition is provided by Skratch Labs and a photographer will be on course. Dogs are allowed when kept on leash and cleaned up after. After event costs are covered, proceeds will go to the Washington Trail Association. Volunteers are welcome for morning setup and evening breakdown.
Course and logistics
The course details and entry information are:
- 2 miles one way
- 4 miles round trip per lap
- Repeats create longer totals (for example, 8 miles, 12 miles)
The course has about 2,100 feet of elevation gain. Reported minimum elevation is 784 feet and maximum elevation is 2,797 feet. Aid is available at the trailhead. No parking pass is required.
