Windermere Marathon : event overview
The Windermere Marathon is a road marathon of 26.2 mile held around Lake Windermere. The course includes hilly sections with an elevation gain of approximately +600 m. Over half of the route is on partially traffic-free roads or roads with a dedicated running lane.
The route starts at Waterhead on the shores of Windermere, heads north and crosses the River Brathay, then passes Brathay and High Wray Castle. It runs by Esthwaite Water and through Near and Far Sawrey, crosses Newby Bridge, and continues north on the east side of Windermere past Bowness and Troutbeck Bridge. The finish is at Brockhole on Windermere where an event village is located.
There are seven drink stations along the course; toilets are provided at every drink station. All stations supply VOOM Hydrate Smart Electrolyte drink and drink station five also provides VOOM Pocket Rocket bars. Finishers receive a Windermere Marathon medal and other items, and there is an option to purchase a finisher t-shirt at entry. The event village at Brockhole includes a bar, food vendors and toilet facilities.
The event has a long history, first held in 1982 and staged annually since 2007 under local organisation until 2024. The event is now organised by The Great Run Company. The 2026 edition is listed as sold out and the final entry price was shown as £75. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
