The Maverick Lakes X-Trail 2026
The Maverick Lakes X-Trail is a one-day trail running event organised by Maverick Race in the Lake District, held at Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Shows, Stock Lane, Grasmere, Ambleside LA22 9SL. Routes start in Grasmere and use mountain trails and established paths.
The course routes pass Easdale Tarn and Stickle Tarn, skirt Pavey Ark and Harrison Stickle, follow sections of the Cumbria Way towards Greater Langdale and run near Loughrigg Tarn. The final section climbs to Rydal Head and the Fairfield Horseshoe before a technical descent back to the venue. The terrain includes steep rocky climbs and technical descents. Dogs are not permitted.
Distances and elevation gains:
- 52 km Ultra, elevation +2858 m
- 43 km Marathon, elevation +2367 m
- 25 km Half Marathon, elevation +1131 m
- 14 km Middle, elevation +617 m
- 9 km Short, elevation +386 m
Outposts and services vary by route. The Ultra has four outposts, the Marathon three and the Half Marathon two; Middle and Short routes have no outpost. Outposts provide top-up snacks, gels and electrolyte drink, and the event aims to be cup free so participants should bring a reusable cup or bottle. Cut off points apply to the 50k Ultra and Marathon and are enforced for safety; the schedule allows approximately 11 hours to complete the longest route.
Mandatory safety kit requirements differ by route and include waterproofs, minimum food and water, a phone, a foil blanket and GPX of the route. The event offers free parking, fully marked and timed courses, online results, event photography, bag drop and finishers medals. Maverick Race donates £1 from every entry to Fix the Fells and there are limited charity places for the 50k through Alzheimer's Research UK.
