William A. Irvin 5K : Duluth, MN
The William A. Irvin 5K is a 3.1-mile race that serves as the kickoff event to Grandma’s Marathon weekend. The race starts and finishes near the historic William A. Irvin ore boat in Canal Park and uses a new course that provides a scenic tour of Duluth.
The course is USATF certified (Code MN25012MAB) and includes one aid/water station located just before the 1.5-mile mark with water, toilets, and first aid. The event typically draws close to 3,000 participants and offers both in-person and a limited virtual option (virtual entries capped at 100). Race results use chip timing. Age-division awards are determined by chip time and winners’ awards are mailed after the race.
Logistics include a pulse-style wave start with runners asked to line up by expected pace, and packet pickup is handled as part of the Essentia Health Fitness Expo; race shirts are distributed at packet pickup and finishers receive a medal immediately after crossing the line. The finish area is secured and requires a visible race bib or credential for access. Additional race resources include a course map and a published FAQ for participants.
