Event overview

The White Mountains 100 is a winter, human-powered 100-mile race held March 22-23, 2026 in the BLM White Mountains National Recreation Area in Alaska. Participants may travel by foot, ski, or bike and have 40 hours to complete the counterclockwise loop that begins and ends at the Wickersham Dome trailhead (Milepost 28, Elliott Highway), about an hour's drive from Fairbanks. The route is mostly on partially maintained snowmachine trails and includes more than 8,000 feet of elevation gain. Terrain features rolling hills, black spruce forests, frozen lowlands, ridgelines, steep descents, water crossings, a climb above treeline at the Cache Mountain Divide, and a mile-long stretch of frozen overflow known as the "ice lakes." Wind, drifting snow, Arctic temperatures, and wildlife encounters are possible.

Logistics, requirements and support

Aid stations are located approximately every 20 miles and provide shelter, food, water, limited sleeping options, and basic medical or emergency support. Racers must have recent winter backcountry experience equivalent to finishing a winter event over 25 miles and/or over 24 hours in the last two years. Registration for the 2026 lottery opens November 29, 2025 and closes December 5, 2025; the entry fee is $285. Parking is not available at the trailhead; vehicles must park in the pullout across the highway. Cell phone service is usually available at the trailhead. Racers are expected to carry adequate food, clothing, and gear for cold, wet, and windy conditions and to be self-sufficient between checkpoints.
