White Mountains 100 : March 22-23, 2026
The White Mountains 100 is a winter, human-powered, 100-mile loop race in the BLM White Mountains National Recreation Area. Participants may travel by foot, ski, or bike and are given 40 hours to complete the course. The route begins and ends at the Wickersham Dome trailhead (Milepost 28, Elliott Highway), roughly 38 miles north of Fairbanks, and follows a counterclockwise loop mostly on partially maintained snowmachine trails with more than 8,000 feet of elevation gain.
Course, conditions, and support
Terrain includes rolling ridges, steep descents, sweeping meadows, black spruce forests, frozen lowlands, scenic ridgelines, and sections of frozen overflow known as the "ice lakes." Notable features include a climb above treeline to the Cache Mountain Divide and limestone jags. Weather and surface conditions can include wind, drifting snow, Arctic temperatures, ankle-deep open water, and wildlife encounters. Aid stations are located at approximately 20-mile intervals and provide shelter, food, water, limited sleeping options, and basic medical or emergency support. The event requires entrants to have recent winter backcountry experience (at least finishing a winter event over 25 miles or over 24 hours in the last two years) and to be largely self-sufficient. Parking is not available at the trailhead; vehicles must use the pullout across the highway. Cell phone service is usually available at the trailhead. Registration uses a lottery and the entry fee is $285. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
