Breakup Duathlon 2026
The Breakup Duathlon takes place on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. The event is named after the Alaskan spring season when ice and snow melt, causing the ice on the Chena River to break into fragments. This event is organized by the Arctic Triathlon Series and serves as a substitute for the traditional triathlon due to local pool maintenance.
The race utilizes a mass start format where all participants begin the first segment simultaneously. The course transitions occur at the Patty Center. The event consists of three consecutive stages:
- 5 km (3.1 mile) run around the university campus
- 20 km (13.1 mile) bike ride on a designated route
- 2 km (1.2 mile) trail run finishing at the Patty Center
The event has a participation limit of 99 athletes. Registration is open to individuals aged 16 and older as of December 31, 2026. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian on-site during the event. A USA Triathlon membership or a single-event pass is required for all competitors.
Optional course previews are available in the week leading up to the race, including a supervised bike ride and a run-through of both running segments. All participants receive a T-shirt, and awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
