Tanana River Challenge : March 20, 2027
The Tanana River Challenge is an endurance event for runners, skiers, skijorers, and cyclists. The event uses lollipop-style courses that run along the Tanana River and through the Rosie Creek forest, with multiple aid stations staffed by volunteers.
Distances:
- 25 miles along the Tanana River and Rosie Creek forest.
- 45 miles along the Tanana River and Rosie Creek forest.
The start and finish are at the Tanana Wayside boat launch off Chena Pump Road in Fairbanks. A skijor division is included; the long course requires a minimum of two dogs. The race is limited to 120 participants. Registration will open in early 2027. Registration fees vary by registration period and are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Race rules require self-sufficiency and prohibit motorized assistance. Racers must check in and attend a mandatory pre-race meeting, complete all official checkpoints, and finish using the same mode of transport they started with. Dogs must be controlled at all times and may not be left on the course; skijorers are responsible for transporting their dogs if they withdraw. Evacuation by race personnel may incur a $100 fee.
The course may change year to year based on river conditions and forest logging. Trail conditions include machine-packed river sections and variable wood-trail surfaces; racers should plan clothing, food, and equipment accordingly. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
