Event overview
The Tanana River Challenge is an endurance race in Fairbanks that accepts runners, skiers, skijorers, and cyclists. The event offers two distances:
- 25 miles
- 45 miles
Both distances follow lollipop routes along the Tanana River and through the Rosie Creek forest. The trail is a snowmachine-packed route that varies from narrow to very wide, is mostly flat, and has no set classic ski tracks. The course will be dragged before the race but may deteriorate with many users; conditions can include windslab and sugary snow.
Registration for the 2026 race opens January 1, 2026. Entry is limited to 120 participants. Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Bib pick-up occurs at the race start during sign-in.
Rules, equipment and logistics
Skijorers may run with up to three dogs and must be in control of their team. The 45-mile division requires at least two dogs; one dog may be used on the 25-mile course if the team is capable. Pulks are optional for skijorers. No motorized assistance is allowed on course. Racers must finish with the same mode of transport they started with and must check in at all official checkpoints. Evacuations may be performed by snowmachine and will incur a $100 fee. The race enforces disqualification for littering, failing to follow course markings, skipping checkpoints, or other rule violations. Parking is available at the Tanana Wayside boat launch in Fairbanks. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
