Event overview

The Tanana River Challenge takes place on March 14, 2026, with start and finish at the Tanana Wayside boat launch off Chena Pump Road in Fairbanks. The event offers two distances:

  • 25 miles
  • 45 miles

The course follows lollipop-style routes along the Tanana River and through the Rosie Creek forest. The race accommodates runners, skiers, skijorers, and cyclists. Skijor is a supported division; the long course requires a minimum of two dogs and the maximum is three dogs for skijorers.

Logistics, rules and services

Registration opens January 1, 2026. Standard, late and race-day fee tiers are published: standard registration lists the 45-mile at $85 and the 25-mile at $65, with higher fees for late and race-day entries. The field is limited to 120 participants. Bib pick-up and race swag are distributed at the start/registration area. Parking at the start/finish is provided for participants.

Racers must be self-sufficient and follow checkpoint procedures. All competitors must check in at every official checkpoint; missing a checkpoint leads to disqualification. No motorized assistance is allowed. Dogs must be under control and not loose; skijorers are responsible for transporting their dogs if they leave the course. Racers who require on-course evacuation will be charged a $100 fee. An after-race gathering will be held at the Ken Kunkel Community Center, 2645 Goldstream Road, Fairbanks.

Suggested equipment varies by discipline but commonly includes a small pack with extra food, water, and layers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
