Welsh Three Peaks Challenge
The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge links three Welsh mountains: Snowdon (1,085 m), Cadair Idris (893 m) and Pen y Fan (886 m). The route covers a total walking distance of 17 miles (27.4 km) with an overall ascent of 2,334 metres (7,657 ft), typically completed in around 19 hours. The three peaks lie across North, Mid and South Wales, so the event involves travel between the mountains.
There are two main ways to take part. On a guided challenge participants are accompanied by experienced mountain leaders, receive transport between the peaks, and have support throughout the day. Alternatively teams can plan their own challenge using route notes, driving links, parking guidance and timing advice provided for each mountain.
Practical details include advice on kit, accommodation and food and drink, plus driving routes and EV charging information. There is no minimum group size so individuals may take part alone or as part of a team. The Welsh Three Peaks records more ascent over a shorter walking distance than the Yorkshire Three Peaks, which results in steeper climbs and requires early starts and cross-Wales logistics.
