The Wall Ultramarathon
The Wall is a continuous, fully supported ultramarathon covering 70 miles (113 km) with approximately +3460 ft of elevation. The route follows Hadrian's Wall country in northern England, starting at Carlisle Castle and finishing at Baltic Quay in Gateshead. The course mixes road and undulating trails and is waymarked with marshals along the route.
The event is designed to be achievable at a sustained pace of 3 mph and has an average completion rate above 90%. The format includes five staffed pit stops that provide food, water, hot drinks, toilets and medical provision, plus checkpoints and a Bag Drop system for personal supplies. Pit stop food options commonly include salty snacks, fruit, sweets and hot drinks and cater where possible for vegetarian and vegan needs though allergen contamination cannot be guaranteed.
Event safety and support include professional 4x4 support vehicles, medical and welfare staff, audited compliance with the BS8848 expedition safety standard, and a sweeper vehicle to collect participants who retire and transport them forward on the course. Registration takes place in person on the Friday before the event in central Carlisle where participants collect mandatory equipment such as trackers. A transfer policy allows entry credit up to one month before the event.
Organisers publish a detailed mandatory kit list. Examples of required items include running shoes or walking boots, a 2 L hydration capacity, a fully charged phone, headtorch with spare batteries, a survival bag, full waterproof body cover and basic first aid supplies. Fundraising through Children with Cancer UK offers a refund of the entry fee up to £275 for participants who raise at least £750. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
