Old Crown Round
The Old Crown Round is an FRA AL-category fell race that completes a loop of the higher summits of the Northern Fells in the Lake District. The course is listed as 36 km / 22.4 m with approximately 2200 m / 7218 ft of ascent. Required skills and experience are given as ER, PM, LK and NS, and the minimum competitor age is 18. The event has been selected as an English Championship AL race for 2026.
The route starts and finishes at the Old Crown Pub in Hesket Newmarket (postcode CA7 8JG, grid ref NY 340 386, what3words: arrival.paler.screamed) and visits summit checkpoints on Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw summit, Knott and High Pike. Terrain includes road, track, paths, open fields and remote open fell; strong navigational skills are essential. Runners may be in cloud and on exposed ground in poor conditions. No poles are allowed.
Event logistics include a large signed carpark close to the start with a £3 charge per car, a registration process that includes kit checks and confirmation of emergency contact details, and a small number of maps for sale at registration (£2.50). Camping is available in the village field with toilets and hot and cold water but no showers or electrical hook-ups. Entry is via SiEntries with staged opening dates for 2026 as described by the organisers.
Mandatory minimum kit comprises a waterproof whole-body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, a physical map and traditional compass, whistle and emergency food. The use of GPS navigation devices or electronic maps and compasses is not permitted. Organisers may add kit requirements depending on conditions.
