Old Crown Round
The Old Crown Round is a long fell race on Saturday 12th September 2026 that loops over the higher summits of the Northern Fells. The race uses the village green at Hesket Newmarket for start and finish and lists the Old Crown Pub as the venue (postcode CA7 8JG, grid ref NY 340 386).
Distance and category: 36 km (22.4 miles) with approximately 2200 m (7218 ft) of ascent. FRA category AL. Minimum age 18. Skills and experience codes listed are ER, PM, LK, NS.
Route and terrain: the course includes road, track, paths, open fields and open fell in remote areas. Checkpoints are located on Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw summit, Knott and High Pike. Navigation skills are essential. There are three river crossing points on the route; marshals or ropes will be provided at some crossings and all runners may be directed to a single crossing if stream levels are high.
Mandatory kit and rules: the FRA mandatory minimum kit for Long A races applies and includes a waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, physical map and traditional compass, whistle and emergency food. The use of GPS or electronic navigation devices is forbidden. Organisers may require additional items depending on conditions.
Cutoff and alternatives: there is a Carrock Fell cutoff; runners who miss it may choose an alternate 27 km route that avoids Blencathra and Skiddaw and will be eligible for a time but not for prizes, or may return to the start.
Practical information: car parking is in a nearby field and is charged at £3 per car. A limited number of paper maps are available for sale at registration (£2.50). Camping in the village field offers toilets and hot and cold water but no showers or electric hook up. The village has a pub, a shop, a playground and a scenic 3 km walk to the river.
