Old Crown Round
The Old Crown Round is an FRA category AL fell race that loops the higher summits of the Northern Fells in the Lake District, starting and finishing on the village green in Hesket Newmarket. The course measures 36 km / 22.4 m with approximately 2200 m of ascent. Minimum age is 18 and the event lists skills and experience codes ER, PM, LK, NS.
Terrain includes road, track, paths, open fields and open fell in some remote areas. Navigational skill is essential. Mandatory checkpoints are on the summits of Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw summit, Knott and High Pike. Runners will encounter river crossings with three marked crossing points and may be directed to a single crossing if water levels are high.
Registration opens between 08:30 and 09:00 with a full kit check. Entry is via SiEntries. The FRA mandatory minimum kit for this category includes a waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, a physical map and a traditional non electronic compass, whistle and emergency food. Use of GPS or electronic navigation devices is forbidden. Organisers may add items to the compulsory kit depending on conditions.
There is a cut off on Carrock Fell requiring runners to reach the summit within 70 minutes. Alternative route options are described for those who miss this cut off. Facilities in the village include a pub, shop and playground. The car park is a large field close to the start with a £3 charge per car. Camping is available in the village field with toilets and water but no showers or electric hook up. No poles are allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
