Old Crown Round

The Old Crown Round is a category AL fell race held in September in the Lake District. The race starts and finishes on the village green in Hesket Newmarket and completes a loop of the higher summits of the Northern Fells.

The route uses road, track, paths, open fields and open fell in some remote areas. Navigational skills are essential. In poor conditions participants may be in cloud and alone on exposed ground.

Checkpoints are located on the summits of Carrock Fell, Blencathra, Skiddaw House, Skiddaw, Knott and High Pike.

Distances:

  • 36 km, 2200 m of ascent
  • 27 km, 1200 m of ascent, no prizes for this option

There is a checkpoint cut off on Carrock Fell that requires reaching the summit within 70 minutes. Runners who miss this cut off may either continue along a lower route via river crossings and the Cumbrian Way to rejoin at Skiddaw House, avoiding Blencathra and Skiddaw, or return to the start by retracing the route.

Entries are by pre entry only; there are no entries on the day. The event has an age limit of 18 or older and operates a no refund policy. To be eligible for British Championships standings or medals, runners must be members of FRA, Scottish Athletics, English Athletics, Welsh Athletics or Athletics Northern Ireland. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
