The Teanaway Navigation Race
The Teanaway Navigation Race takes place in the Teanaway Valley near Cle Elum, Washington. The event is held in the Teanaway Community Forest, featuring a landscape of open pine forests, clearings, and wildflowers. The terrain includes sandy soil with ankle-high grass, woody shrubs, and some thickets. Participants navigate through the area using a highly detailed orienteering map at a 1:15000 scale, which provides color-coded vegetation data to indicate passability. The course utilizes a mix of service roads, gravel roads, and single-track trails.
The event offers three distinct duration options:
- 2-hour Nav Race
- 4-hour Nav Race
- 8-hour Nav Race
On the morning of the race, a free Introduction to Navigation session is provided. This session covers map reading, contour lines, basic navigation, and how to use a compass. The start, finish, and registration area is located on W Fork Teanaway Road. Parking is available along the south side of the road, and a Discover Pass is required for all vehicles parking or camping within the Teanaway Community Forest.
Free camping is available at the West Fork Teanaway Campground, located less than a mile from the start. This primitive site offers pit toilets but no running water or electricity. In addition to the navigation race on Saturday, a separate trail run featuring multiple distances is held the following day in the same valley.
