2.3. Kent Backyard Ultra Series: Sholden
The event takes place on Saturday 10 April 2027 at Lillyroo’s Glamping, Sandwich Road, Deal, Kent, CT14 0AT. It is part of Kent Backyard Ultra Series II and offers two formats: the full Backyard Ultra and a 7 Hour Challenge. Total entries are capped at 120 runners and the 7 Hour Challenge is limited to 10 places.
The Backyard Ultra format uses a single loop of 4.167 miles known as a yard. Runners must complete one yard every hour, on the hour, and continue until only one runner remains. Each yard on this course has about 8 metres of ascent. The route is a flat, out and back gravel trail across coastal marshland; it is wide, runnable, easy to follow and accessible for support crews. Because the route is out and back, runners regularly pass each other during the event.
The 7 Hour Challenge follows the same course and rules but finishes after a maximum of seven yards, which covers just over 29 miles. Camping, glamping and campervan options are available for those who want to stay at the venue; a bar and freshly cooked food will be on site. Supporters and crew are welcome. The minimum age is 16 and runners under 18 require parent or guardian consent.
Efforts are recognised with event awards including a DNF medal for completing at least one yard, a bronze buckle for 24 yards / 100 miles, gold and silver awards for overall placings, and series buckles for cumulative performance across the full series.
