The FRED Running Relays
The FRED Running Relays present team-based relay events on the fully paved White Pine Trail in western Michigan. The course runs through woods and countryside and passes around Lake Cadillac. The White Pine Trail was formerly the Grand Rapids - Indian Railway, retired in 1985, and is described as a 92-mile paved trail between Grand Rapids and Cadillac.
Distances offered include:
- 200 miles - 6, 9, or 12 person crews
- 100 miles - 3 or 6 person crews
- 50 miles - up to 11 person crew
- 25 miles - up to 6 person crew
Event routing and format vary by distance. The 25 mile relay runs from Sand Lake and finishes at Third Nature Brewing. The 50 mile relay begins at the Big Rapids White Pine Trailhead and finishes at Third Nature Brewing. The 100 mile relay begins in Cadillac and progresses south to Third Nature Brewing. The 200 mile relay begins in Belmont, travels north and around Lake Cadillac, then returns to Belmont; it is described as consisting of 36 legs, with individual legs ranging from 2 to 9.5 miles.
Teams typically plan who runs each segment and use vehicles to support exchanges; organizers note teams often use two vehicles with up to 6 runners in each so vehicles can alternate active periods. A percentage of event proceeds goes to the West Michigan Trails Organization. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
