Event Overview
The FRED Running Relays offers team-based relay events over distances of 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, and 200 miles. Teams combine efforts to cover the chosen distance together.
Course Details
All events take place on the fully paved White Pine Trail. This trail was formerly the Grand Rapids - Indian Railway and is now a 92-mile paved path stretching from Grand Rapids to Cadillac. The route travels through woods, countryside, and around Lake Cadillac.
Distances and Formats
- The FRED 200 Relay: This is the longest distance, featuring 36 legs (or "spurs"). The route travels from Belmont, north to and around Lake Cadillac, and returns to Belmont. Individual leg distances range from 2 to 9.5 miles. Team size options are 6, 9, or 12-person crews. Teams often use two vehicles to alternate being active on the course, with designated vehicle exchange/rest areas in Pierson, Reed City, and Lake Cadillac.
- The FRED 100 Relay: This event covers 18 legs, starting in Cadillac at "Spur 19" and progressing south to Belmont. Teams are made of up to 6 participants.
- The FRED 50 Relay: This event consists of 11 legs, running from Big Rapids to Belmont. Teams can have up to 11 participants.
- The FRED 25 Relay: This event starts in Sand Lake, Michigan, and finishes at Third Nature Brewing. It includes 5 suggested segments. A specific category is available for teams fully composed of high school athletes.
Additional Information
Participants receive a shirt, a finisher medal, and one complimentary food and drink ticket redeemable at Third Nature Brewing. A percentage of the event's proceeds goes to the West Michigan Trails Organization. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
