Overview
The FRED Running Relays are a set of team relay events held on the White Pine Trail in western Michigan. The event base is at 7733 Childsdale Ave NE, Rockford, MI 49341. Teams combine to cover set distances by running a sequence of relay legs on a fully paved trail that passes through woods, countryside and around Lake Cadillac. A portion of event proceeds is donated to the West Michigan Trails Organization. The event uses What3Words location markers for start and exchange locations.
Distances
- 25 Mile Relay : team up to 6; five suggested segments; starts in Sand Lake.
- 25 Mile Relay - Highschool : same course; team must be all high school athletes.
- 50 Mile Relay : up to 11 participants; 11 relay legs from Big Rapids to Belmont.
- 100 Mile Relay : up to 6 participants; 18 relay legs from Lake Cadillac to Belmont.
- 200 Mile Relay : team sizes 6, 9 or 12; 36 total relay legs.
Course and logistics
The White Pine Trail used for the relays is described as a 92-mile paved trail. The 200-mile race is divided into 36 spurs, with individual legs ranging from about 2 to 9.5 miles. Designated rest and vehicle exchange areas are listed for Pierson, Reed City and Lake Cadillac; teams commonly operate with two vehicles so one vehicle can rest while the other is active.
