Event Overview
The FRED Running Relays are a series of team relay races taking place on Michigan's White Pine Trail. Teams combine their efforts to cover distances of 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, or 200 miles. The course is fully paved.
Course Details
The entire relay series uses the White Pine Trail. This trail is a 92-mile paved pathway that stretches from Grand Rapids to Cadillac, passing through woods, countryside, and near Lake Cadillac. The route was originally a railway line, retired in 1985.
Relay Formats and Distances
Each distance is a separate team event:
- 200 Mile Relay: Starts Friday morning from Belmont. It involves 36 legs (or "spurs"), traveling north to and around Lake Cadillac before returning to Belmont. Leg distances range from 2 to 9.5 miles. Team size options are 6, 9, or 12 persons.
- 100 Mile Relay: Starts Friday night from Cadillac and involves 18 legs, progressing south to Belmont.
- 50 Mile Relay: Starts Saturday morning from the Big Rapids White Pine Trailhead and involves 11 legs, progressing south to Belmont. Teams can have up to 11 participants.
- 25 Mile Relay: Starts Saturday morning from Sand Lake, Michigan, and involves 5 suggested segments, finishing at Third Nature Brewing in Rockford.
Team Logistics
Teams plan which members run specific sections. For the longer distances, teams often use two vehicles, allowing one vehicle to be active on the course while the other rests. Designated rest and vehicle exchange areas for the 200-mile relay are in Pierson, Reed City, and Lake Cadillac. Team start times are calculated based on the team's average pace.
Participant Perks
Registration includes a shirt, a finisher medal, and one complimentary food and drink ticket redeemable at Third Nature Brewing. A percentage of the event's proceeds supports the West Michigan Trails Organization. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
