The Fools' Ultra: Revenge of Champy
The Fools' Ultra is a series of multi-day foot races across New York state. Routes begin at sites such as Niagara Falls, Lake Ontario, Cranberry Lake, and Lake Placid, and converge toward Port Henry on Lake Champlain near the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse and the Samuel Champlain statue.
Race distances include:
- 420 miles coast to coast across New York to Lake Champlain
- 200 miles from Lake Ontario shoreline following the remaining route
- 100 miles from Cranberry Lake beach returning on foot to Lake Champlain
- 50 miles from Lake Placid ski jump area across the high peaks to Port Henry
Each distance has a fixed completion window and a required daily average mileage. The 420 mile event is allotted 13 days and requires roughly 32 miles per day. The 200 mile event is allotted 8 days and targets about 28 miles per day. The 100 mile event is allotted 2 days with about 33 miles per day. The 50 mile event has a 24 hour limit.
Runners are divided into two categories. Un-Afraid runners are self supported and must carry their own gear; race staff will not store items for them. Afraid runners are supported and may use crews. Some stages use buses to transfer runners along the route and to start points. Hotel arrangements and meal provisions vary by distance and category. There are no refunds or deferrals.
