Event overview
The Algonquin 50K is a community-driven, non-profit trail race held in Pocomoke City, Maryland. The event takes place in Pocomoke River State Park and is organized by volunteers in collaboration with Maryland Parks and Forest Services. The advertised distance is 50K (approximately 31 miles or more).
Course
The route is a modified out-and-back with a unique middle section on the return trip. About 95% of the course is on trail, including single-track and wider horse paths. The terrain is mostly flat, with sections of sandy trail and potential standing water depending on rainfall. The race starts and finishes at Milburn Landing.
Aid and support
Aid stations are fully stocked approximately every 5–6 miles. Offerings include water, Tailwind Nutrition, soda, boiled potatoes, salty snacks, and cake. Volunteers are posted at road crossings with minimal traffic, and horses sweep the course to assist with safety.
Rules, cutoff, and weather
The final cutoff is 8 hours; the race crew may remove runners who fall significantly behind pace, and pulled runners are not permitted to continue. Key rules include no drop bags, no bib transfers or deferrals, no early or late starts, no dogs for runners, and no littering. Pacers are not allowed, though friends or family may join runners from the end of the Algonquin Trail to the finish. If a runner withdraws, they must turn in their bib to the nearest race crew and proceed to an aid station for pickup. The event runs in rain, snow, or sleet; cancellation only occurs under extreme conditions, and no refunds or credits are issued if the event is canceled.
Awards and finisher items
All finishers receive a locally handmade ceramic mug. Awards are given to the top three men and top three women. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
