Event Overview
The Thatcher Markham Memorial Run is a community event held in Hancock and Houghton, Michigan. The event honors the memory of a local youth and supports the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association and the Pigs 'N Heat relief fund. Participants follow a 3.1 mile (5K) course that goes through both downtown areas and over the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.
The event consists of two main categories:
- 5K Run
- 5K Non-Competitive Walk
Course Details
The course is described as flat and fast with no major uphill climbs and a net elevation loss. It features one significant downhill section near the Michigan Tech campus. The route begins on Quincy Street in Hancock and moves through downtown before crossing the Portage Lake Lift Bridge into Houghton.
After passing through downtown Houghton, participants transition briefly to sidewalks and eventually reach a bicycle path along the Portage Canal shoreline. The finish line is located at the Houghton Pier, situated between the Lakeshore Center and the Portage Lake District Library. An aid station providing water and sports drinks is located along the route on College Avenue.
Logistics and Safety
Portions of the race occur immediately before the Bridgefest parade. Participants must remain ahead of the parade vehicles until the course diverges from the parade route. For safety, the use of headphones is discouraged because parts of the course remain open to traffic. Participants on shared roads must remain on the left side facing traffic and proceed no more than two abreast.
Finish line amenities include water, sports drinks, and snacks. The event features professional chip timing and t-shirts for all participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
