Canal Run
Canal Run takes place along the Portage Lake Shipping Canal in Hancock, Michigan, following rolling hills beside the water. The event presents multiple running and walking options on measured distances and includes a mix of competitive and recreational entries.
Distances offered at the event include:
- 13.1 miles
- 10 miles
- 5 miles
- 2 miles
- 0.25 miles (kids dash)
Adaptive categories are offered for selected distances, and the event explicitly includes races for wheelchair and blade participants. Official event entries include a half marathon, 10 mile run, 5 mile run, 10 mile walk, 5 mile walk, 2 mile fun run or walk, and a kids dash.
The Canal Run operates on a self-sustaining financial model using registration fees and sponsorships to cover event costs. The organizing committee has directed proceeds to area nonprofit organizations through the Canal Run Gives Back program and has donated more than $30,000 since 2011.
