UP Health System Great Bear Chase
The UP Health System Great Bear Chase is a cross-country skiing event held at the Swedetown ski trails in Calumet, Michigan. The venue is located in an area that receives an average of more than 230 inches of annual snowfall. The event offers a variety of distances and techniques for participants.
Distances available for skiers include:
- 52 km Skiathlon, freestyle, and classic races
- 24 km Freestyle and classic races
- 20 km Skiathlon race
- 10 km Freestyle and classic races
- 3 km and 5 km Para Nordic events
- 1 km, 2 km, and 4 km Junior Bear Chase races
The Para Nordic events are provided free of charge through support from the Midwest Adaptive Nordic Foundation. The Junior Bear Chase events are also free and are categorized by age recommendations, including classic and freestyle options for children ranging from ages 3 to 10 and older.
Participants receive a Great Bear Chase hat and other items. The event includes overall and age-group awards and door prizes. A pasty luncheon is provided for those taking part in the races after they finish. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
