Keweenaw Ultramarathon
The Keweenaw Ultramarathon is a trail race held on the Michigan Technological University Tech Trails in Houghton, Michigan, located off the south side of Sharon Avenue across from Sherman Field. The event offers supported trail running on mapped looped routes.
Distances
- 50K: two loops of the course
- 25K: one loop of the course
The course is marked with neon flags on the runner's right; flags on the left indicate the wrong way. Closed or unwanted trail sections are marked with caution tape. The 50K begins in darkness so all 50K runners must carry a headlamp for the first 1.5 hours.
Aid stations are located at the main trailhead and at Nara, with aid encounters at miles 4.2 (6.8 km), 11.8 (19 km), 15.6 (25.1 km), 19.8 (31.9 km), and 27.4 (44.1 km). Aid stations provide water, drink mix, and typical ultra foods. All athletes must check in at each aid station by giving their bib number.
Logistics include bib pick-up on race morning, drop bag access at the community room, tent, or cars, and parking at the main trailhead with overflow parking available nearby. Road crossings over Pilgrim Road will have volunteer assistance but volunteers will not stop vehicle traffic. Races are timed through UltraSignup with no live tracking. The race enforces time limits: a seven-hour cut-off for the 25K and an eight-hour cut-off for the 50K. Pacers are not allowed. Merchandise t-shirts are sold on site for $20.
