Keweenaw Ultramarathon
The Keweenaw Ultramarathon takes place at the Michigan Technological University Tech Trails in Houghton, Michigan. The event features a scenic route through the woods, primarily utilizing the trail systems located off the south side of Sharon Avenue. The course is fully supported with aid stations and organized by the Keweenaw Ultra Marathon Club.
Participants can choose between two race distances:
- 50 km
- 25 km
The course is designed as a loop. Those participating in the 25 km distance complete one loop, while the 50 km participants complete two loops. Because the longer distance begins before daylight, a headlamp is required for the first portion of the race. The route is marked with neon flags on the right-hand side, and trail intersections are managed with caution tape.
Aid stations are positioned at several points along the course, including the main trailhead and Nara. These stations provide water, drink mix, and standard food items. Runners must check in at each station by providing their bib number. For gear and personal items, a community room and a tent are available at the trailhead, though participants may also access their own vehicles during the race.
The event has specific time limits for safety reasons: eight hours for the 50 km and seven hours for the 25 km. Parking is available at the main trailhead lot and an adjacent overflow field. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
