Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival
The Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival takes place in Hancock, Michigan, utilizing the Maasto Hiihto, Churning Rapids, and Swedetown trail systems. The 2026 edition operates as a Poker Run where participants collect chips at various stations located along the routes. These chips are submitted at the end to determine a poker hand, with prizes awarded for the best hands.
Trail runners and mountain bikers can choose from several distance options based on established trail markings:
- 12-mile loop with approximately 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
- 21-mile loop with approximately 2,000 feet of elevation gain.
- Adventure route available specifically for cyclists.
The event is self-supported, meaning there are no guaranteed aid stations or course sweeps provided. Participants are responsible for their own navigation and hydration. While the short and long courses feature directional markings, the use of GPS or mobile navigation devices is recommended for all participants.
Registration is free of charge, though participants have the option to donate to the local trail systems during the entry process. To manage congestion at the poker chip stations, participants start in staggered time slots. Early registrants are entered into a drawing for gift certificates from local shops. The event base is located at the UP Health System - Portage parking lot. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
