Tale of Two Trails
The race takes place in Shawnee Mission Park in Johnson County, Kansas, and offers multiple distances: a 50 miler, 40 mile, 20 mile, and 10 mile. The event combines two separate trail systems within the park; the 20, 40, and 50 mile options run on both the park’s north and south shore trail systems, connected by a short paved section. Each full loop measures about 20 miles, while the 10 mile course uses a single trail system.
The course features a mix of smooth, runnable sections and technical stretches with roots, rocks, and rolling hills. Much of the route runs under tree canopy with some exposed areas. Markings include flags, ribbons, and additional signage for turns; runners are responsible for following the marked route while the trails remain open to the public.
If county or land managers close trails, organizers will switch to a backup 10 mile route that uses bridle trail, cross country, gravel, power line access, and some paved trail; start/finish and parking locations remain the same. Aid stations are cupless, so participants must carry a reusable cup; aid stations offer drinks, Tailwind, fruits, sandwiches, salty snacks, sweets, and late-day soup. Drop bags are allowed for 40 and 50 mile entrants at designated locations and must be labeled clearly.
Timing is by clock and bibs must be visible. Runners who withdraw must notify aid station volunteers to be recorded as did not finish. Other rules include no alcohol in the park, no dogs, no hiking poles except by approved exemption, and no littering. Podium awards and finisher medals are given for each distance.
