Southern Grit Endurance Challenge
Southern Grit takes place in south central Kentucky in the Knobs region near the small community of Butchertown in northern Casey County. The event is held at the historic Rousey Home Place, located near the Casey and Boyle County lines, and is roughly 50 miles south south west of Lexington and about 15 miles south south west of Danville.
The event offers timed endurance running and rucking in 3 hour, 6 hour, 12 hour, and 24 hour formats, plus a pacer role. The course is a loop of 5.4 miles and laps are chip timed. Visible race bibs are required for lap credit. Placement is based on total laps completed; if competitors complete the same number of laps the first person back to the finish line on their final lap wins. Starting a final lap before the clock expires counts even if the lap finishes after time expires.
A full service main aid station is located at the start/finish with water, electrolytes, snacks, and hot food. Water and Tailwind are available on course. The event is cup free so participants must bring personal hydration systems; disposable speed cups are available at packet pickup. Headlamps are required for nighttime running and backups or extra batteries are advised. The course is marked with flags and tape at crossings. Pacing and crewing are allowed. Rules prohibit unsportsmanlike conduct, course cutting, littering, or policy violations and such actions can lead to disqualification.
Primitive camping is available on site for Friday and Saturday nights with spaces sized for up to a 10' x 10' tent. Restrooms are provided but there are no showers. Pets are not allowed on the premises due to insurance restrictions.
Awards are given to the top three male and top three female in each timed event. Ruck divisions award top overall male and female. Finishers receive a special award and those who reach 100 miles receive a special buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
