Two-Day Mountain Navigation Competition
The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon is an annual mountain navigation event held in the Lake District. Designed for teams of two runners, this competition takes place over two days and requires participants to navigate between checkpoints using a map and compass. The event includes an overnight camp, and all teams must carry the required lightweight camping and safety equipment for the duration of the competition.
Participants choose from seven different courses that vary in technical difficulty and total distance. Specific entry limits are set for each course:
- Fairfield (140 pairs)
- Scafell (40 pairs)
- Kirkfell (80 pairs)
- Carrock Fell (100 pairs)
- Harter Fell (130 pairs)
- Wansfell (130 pairs)
- Bedafell (85 pairs)
The competition has an overall participation limit of 575 teams. Runners must be at least 14 years old to enter. As the Lake District terrain can produce adverse conditions, teams are required to be competent in mountain navigation. The event is organized as a not-for-profit initiative, with proceeds supporting the Brathay Trust. An outdoor sports retailer, Pete Bland Sports, is also present at the event site.
