Run With The Bears 5K
The Run With The Bears 5K is a 5 km road race held in Plymouth, North Carolina. It coincides with the 12th anniversary of the town's Bear Festival and is part of the celebration for the 250th anniversary of US independence. The event is a fundraiser for the Washington County Historical Society.
Course Details
The route is described as a tour of Plymouth's historic, river, and downtown districts. The course is mostly a relatively flat road race, with a short section on a nature trail that has uneven terrain and gravel. It passes numerous historical sites, including Grace Episcopal Church (c. 1861), a replica of the CSS Albemarle ironclad, Fort Compher, and several historic homes marked by Civil War history. A water station is located near the 2 mile mark at the First Baptist Church. The race starts on Washington Street near the Bear Towne Market.
Registration & Amenities
Registration includes a race t-shirt. Awards are given for the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three in multiple age groups. The first 218 finishers receive a 10th anniversary finisher medal. Water and bananas are provided at the finish line. The event is professionally timed.
Historical Significance
The race begins with the firing of a full-sized replica Civil War cannon. The course is designed to highlight Plymouth's history, running along the Roanoke River, a boardwalk, and past many landmarks. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
