Rothwell Cakeathon
Rothwell Cakeathon is a trail running event organised by Its Grim Up North Running at Skelton Lake Services off the M1 (J45). The event starts behind the services and routes enter Rothwell Country Park, offering a mix of woodland, riverside paths, grassy trails and some sections on road. One short climb gives a view of Leeds City Centre. The services site includes a rooftop bird hide and operates as an eco-focused hub. The organiser donates 50p per participant to the RSPB.
Distances include:
- Marathon: 5 × 5-mile loops plus 1.2-mile out and back
- 20 Miles: 4 × 5-mile loops
- 15 Miles: 3 × 5-mile loops
- 10 Miles: 2 × 5-mile loops
- 5 Miles: 1 × 5-mile loop
Support on course includes water and feed stations approximately every 3 miles, marshals, and a recommendation to bring a reusable cup or bottle to reduce single use. There may be unmarshalled road crossings. Finish facilities include a bespoke medal, a selection of cakes, and hot and cold drinks in a social finish area. Large over-ear headphones are not permitted for safety; bone-conducting devices or listening with one ear uncovered are suggested. The event has a 6.5 hour cut-off, welcomes walkers and runners, and is licensed by the TRA under UKA rules.
