About the race
The Rhinebeck Ferncliff Forest Turkey Trot is a Thanksgiving morning 5K held in Rhinebeck, New York, to support Ferncliff Forest. The event raises funds to keep the private preserve open for public use year round; the preserve receives no government funding and has had no paid directors, board members, or executives while being maintained since 1964. The course is a paved out and back along Montgomery Street and Mt Rutsen Road from Astor Drive to Ferncliff Forest and back, featuring gentle rolling hills. The race uses a gun start with chip timing, and individual chip times begin when a runner crosses the start line.
The event is family friendly: kids under five enter free, strollers are permitted, well behaved dogs on leash are allowed, and walkers are welcome. The first 750 entries receive a soft cotton T shirt, which can be reserved during registration. A separate donation program offers one raffle chance for every five dollars donated; raffle prizes include goods and services from local merchants, gift certificates, gas cards, and frozen turkeys. Packet pick-up is available the evening before at Rhinebeck Bagels and on race morning in the church hall.
Awards go to the top three overall male and female finishers, top three in each age group, and all kids under ten receive an award. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
