Race Overview
The Quilcene Oyster Races take place in Quilcene, Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. This event features multiple distances that are USATF certified and sanctioned. Participants can choose between several road and trail options that showcase the natural landscape of the region, including woodlands, farms, and coastal scenery.
The following distances are available:
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles) featuring views of Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains.
- 10K (6.17 miles) covering hilly terrain with views of Quilcene Bay and local forests.
- 5K (3.11 miles) an out-and-back course along the bay on paved country roads.
- Kids' Sprint a short-distance event held on the field for children age 8 and younger.
Course Details and Rules
The Half Marathon is a hilly course with a total ascent of 1,019 feet and a maximum elevation of 699 feet. The 10K includes hilly sections with a total ascent of 200 feet. The 5K is a flatter alternative, beginning and ending on a level grassy field with a total ascent of 105 feet. All results and rankings for these races are determined by chip timing.
Specific "Duo" categories are available for those wishing to participate while pushing jogging chairs, strollers, or wagons. These participants start in a separate corral from individual runners. Per USATF rules, only service dogs are permitted on the course; pets are not allowed.
Event Amenities
All participants in the primary race categories receive a commemorative finisher medal. After the event, local oysters and a local craft beer for those 21 and over are provided. The races begin and end at Worthington Park, where participants can also attend an open house at the restored Victorian-era Worthington Mansion.
Proceeds from the event support Quilcene-Brinnon Dollars for Scholars, providing scholarships for post-secondary and continuing education for local students and teachers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
