About the race
Pendle Way On A Midsummers Night is a limited-entry staging of the Pendle Way route, held on Midsummer night in Pendle, East Lancashire. The event is organised as a night-time ultra with an emphasis on navigation and hill terrain; it includes sections across moorland and valleys around Pendle and starts and finishes at Barley Village Hall.
Two route options are offered:
- 45 miles full Pendle Way route, approx 68.6 km total
- 30 miles shorter route, approx 46.4 km total
The course includes several staffed checkpoints and additional self-clip points. Checkpoint locations given in the route plan include Higham, Coldwell, Wycoller/Laneshawbridge, Earby (45 mile only), Barnoldswick and Barrowford, with the final control at Barley Village Hall. Checkpoint closure times align with an overall 16 hour completion limit.
Mandatory kit requirements are listed: full-body waterproof cover, map (OS 1:25k provided on the day; OL21 recommended), headtorch and spare batteries or a second headtorch, compass, whistle, mug, fully charged mobile phone, and appropriate fell or trail footwear. The event requires navigational ability and involves notable climbing; it is not suitable for beginners. Minimum entrant age is 18 years. No dogs are permitted. GPX tracks and written instructions are provided for guidance only and GPX should not be used as a navigational aid. Parking is available near Barley Village Hall.
