Event Overview
The Peebles Pootle is a long-distance event starting from the Community Centre in Peebles. The routes are primarily designed for walkers, but the event is open to runners. Participants traverse varied terrain in the Tweed Valley, including broad grassy ridges and occasional peat hags. The courses are not waymarked, although signs may be placed at specific junctions.
Courses and Distances
Participants can choose between two distinct routes:
- 27.6 miles: This course features a total elevation gain of 5,643 feet (1,720m) and has a 12 hour time limit.
- 16.4 miles: This shorter option includes a total ascent of 2,943 feet (897m) and has an 8 hour time limit.
Route Details
Both routes begin by crossing the River Tweed via a pedestrian footbridge and joining the Cross Borders Drove Road. The path leads to the first climb at Dead Side and continues over several summits, including Hundleshope Heights, Glenrath Heights, Stake Law, Birkscairn Hill, and Birks Hill.
At the Droves Road, the routes split. The shorter course returns via Kailzie Hill. The longer route continues along the Drove Road to connect with the Southern Upland Way, passing through Traquair Village Hall. It then ascends Lee Pen, Mill Ridge, Black Knowe, Black Law, Leithen Door Hill, and Peebles Rig. The final descent goes through Glentress Forest on a forest track back to Peebles.
