Event Overview
The Padden Triathlon is a multi-sport event held at the West Entrance of Lake Padden Park in Bellingham. The event features chip-timed racing across two distinct distances, catering to both competitive and recreational participants. The swim portion takes place in Lake Padden, followed by cycling on roads open to vehicles and a running leg within the park.
Race Options
Participants can choose between two primary race distances:
- Competitive (Long Course): Features a 1/2 mile swim, a 21.4 mile bike ride, and a 5.2 mile run.
- Recreational (Short Course): Features a 1/4 mile swim, a 14.4 mile bike ride, and a 2.6 mile run.
The bike route for both distances has been updated to accommodate regional infrastructure work. Swim legs are conducted in triangle formations, with participants self-seeding into heats of approximately 50 people.
Regulations and Logistics
The event is chip-timed, and timing chips must be returned at the finish. Specific rules include mandatory swim caps and buckled bike helmets. The cycling course is not draft-legal. Participants must be at least 10 years old, with divisions categorized by age and gender.
The transition area is restricted to participants only, and bicycles must be walked or run through this zone. Participants have a time limit of 3 hours for the Long Course and 2.5 hours for the Short Course. Parking is available via the 40th Street entrance, as the main park entrance is closed for the transition area. Environmental measures are in place to prevent the spread of New Zealand Mud Snails, including spray treatments for footwear used in the lake.
