Northern, Lakes, Dales and Moors Traverse
The Northern, Lakes, Dales and Moors Traverse series comprises a set of ultra races across northern England. The full Northern Traverse covers about 300km from St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast, crossing three National Parks and including mountains, valleys and moors with roughly 6,500m of ascent.
Distances in the series include:
- 300km Northern Traverse: St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay, ~6,500m ascent
- 100km Lakes Traverse: St Bees to Shap, ~3,500m ascent, 28 hour time limit
- 80km Moors Traverse: Ingleby Cross to Robin Hood's Bay, ~1,600m elevation
- 55km Dales Traverse: Kirkby Stephen to below Richmond Castle, ~1,400m elevation
The Lakes Traverse follows the Northern Traverse start and crosses the Lake District, passing through Ennerdale and Borrowdale, over Grasmere Common and Fairfield, through Patterdale, over Kidsty Pike and along Haweswater into Shap. The Moors Traverse follows the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park and continues through eastern Yorkshire to Robin Hood's Bay. The Dales Traverse passes through the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, over the Nine Standards and through Swaledale into the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
