Event overview

The Nanaimo Open Water Swim and Mudskipper SwimRun Challenge is a Canaqua Sports event at Westwood Lake Park in Nanaimo, British Columbia on August 9, 2026. This is the event's second edition and combines open water swim races with an individual SwimRun format around Westwood Lake.

Events and distances

  • Open Water Swim: 1K, 3K, 5K (each lap = 1.0 K)
  • Mudskipper SwimRun: one-lap ~9.5K; two-lap ~19.0K

The open water swim options consist of 1, 3, or 5 laps of the same 1.0 K loop. The Mudskipper SwimRun takes place in stages around the lake; the longer SwimRun is completed by repeating the same stages twice.

Logistics, rules and facilities

Swim caps will be provided and must be worn for identification. Each participant will have a race number inked on the upper back or shoulder. Wetsuits are optional for most events. Reported lake water temperatures at this time of year range between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. There is no separate rain date; a delay or cancellation would occur only in the event of lightning. Onsite check-in, a mandatory race briefing, washrooms, and food service are available. Equipment guidance for SwimRun notes the use of shoes suitable for running and swimming, optional hand paddles, and flotation aids no larger than 100 cm x 60 cm.
