Nanaimo Open Water Swim and SwimRun Challenge
The Nanaimo Open Water Swim and SwimRun Challenge returns for its second annual edition at Westwood Lake Park in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Organized by Canaqua Sports, the event features a variety of aquatic and multi-sport disciplines held within the grounds of Westwood Lake.
The Open Water Swim competitions take place on a loop course, with different distances determined by the number of laps completed:
- 1.0 km (1 lap)
- 3.0 km (3 laps)
- 5.0 km (5 laps)
The Mudskipper SwimRun component offers a unique format where participants transition between swimming and running sections without changing gear. The course navigates the trails and waters in and around Westwood Lake across several stages. Available distances include:
- 9.5 km or 10.0 km (1 lap consisting of 5 stages)
- 19.0 km, 19.5 km, or 20.0 km (2 laps of the course)
Technical details for the event indicate that the water temperature typically ranges between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. The use of wetsuits is optional for all races. For SwimRun participants, additional equipment such as hand paddles and pull buoys is permitted, provided it is carried throughout the running portions. Swim caps are provided by the organizers and are mandatory for identification. Facilities on-site include washrooms and food services for participants.
