MTC Beowulf Overview
The MTC Beowulf is a long-distance running event covering a total distance of 36 miles (approximately 35.4 miles according to route data). The course begins at Shrewsbury Battlefield and concludes at The Talbot Hotel, passing through locations such as Much Wenlock and Cleobury North. The route features approximately 2,440 feet of ascent and 2,252 feet of descent.
This event functions as a standalone single-day challenge or as Day 6 of the MTC Albion, a 13-day journey across England. It follows the same path used in the MTC JOGLE event. The field is limited to 20 individual entrants, with an additional 20 spots reserved for those participating in the full Albion series, creating a maximum race capacity of 40 people.
Course and Logistics
The organizers provide three intermediate checkpoints along the route. These stations offer various food items, which typically include malt loaf, cake, sandwiches, and assorted drinks such as squash and cola. This is a cup-free event, meaning participants must provide their own reusable cups for hydration.
Participants must maintain a minimum average speed of 4 mph. Specific time restrictions apply at each checkpoint:
- 8.8 miles: Checkpoint 1 (Shrewsbury)
- 17.9 miles: Checkpoint 2 (Easthope)
- 25.4 miles: Checkpoint 3 (Cleobury North)
- 35.4 miles: Finish (The Talbot Hotel)
Finishers receive a bespoke Beowulf medal, while the male and female champions are awarded a race trophy.
Equipment Requirements
All participants must carry mandatory safety gear, which is subject to inspection. The required kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, maps, a compass or GPS device, a whistle, a mobile phone, a basic first aid kit, and an emergency food pack. The organizers provide a tracking device to each runner for progress monitoring and emergency assistance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
