Event Overview

The Mount Disappointment Mountain Race is a trail running event with two ultra distances, a 25K and a 50K. It takes place in the Angeles National Forest, starting and finishing at the summit of Mt. Wilson. The race offers panoramic views of the San Gabriel Valley and passes by historic sites.

Distances

  • 25K: 15.5 miles with 3,800 ft of elevation gain.
  • 50K: 31 miles with 7,000 ft of elevation gain.

Both races start simultaneously. Cutoff times are five hours for the 25K and ten hours for the 50K.

Course and Logistics

The course is 100% trail, with 95% being technical single track. It features rocky sections, steep climbs, and descents through pine forests and chaparral. The route is marked with ribbons and signs. Aid stations are fully stocked and placed every 5–7 miles. Participants are advised to carry additional water between specific points and are recommended to have GPS tracks available. Trekking poles are permitted. The race starts at Skyline Park at the Mt. Wilson Observatory parking lot. Parking is limited, and an Adventure Pass is required for vehicles. Packet pickup is available only on race morning.

Rules and Awards

Drop bags and pacers are not permitted. Aid station cutoff times are strictly enforced. Top three male and female finishers in each distance receive awards. All finishers receive a medal and a tech shirt; 50K finishers also receive a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
