Mount Desert Island Marathon, Half & Relay
The Mount Desert Island Marathon, Half & Relay is an annual road race on Mount Desert Island, Maine, held the weekend following Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The event includes a Marathon, a Half-Marathon, a Team Relay, a Public Safety Relay, and a Kids Run. The Marathon and Team Relay start in Bar Harbor, the Half-Marathon starts in Northeast Harbor, and all races finish in front of Pemetic School in Southwest Harbor.
The award-winning course runs along shoreline and island roads and passes lakes, mountains, small villages, and seaside vistas near Acadia National Park, including Somes Sound. The course is USATF certified. Race timing is provided by ARE Event Productions using B-Tag timing, with live tracking and results available online.
All finishers receive the event medallion known as the Crusher Claw. Prize purses are offered for top overall finishers in the Marathon and Half-Marathon, with monetary awards for the top three men and women and additional time bonuses for certain performance thresholds. Age-group awards are given to the top three men and women in standard age categories, and local Mount Desert Island area residents receive separate recognition.
Race operations are managed by Crow Athletics, a nonprofit organization. Participants must pick up their own bib in person with photo ID at the designated packet pickup location on the days before the race; unclaimed bibs are available on race morning at a downtown pickup point.
