Mineshaft 10k
Mineshaft 10k is a trail running event on March 13, 2027 in Buchanan, VA that follows a section of the Hellgate 100k course (miles 47 to 52) in reverse along the Glenwood Horse Trail between Bobletts Gap Road and the Bearwallow Trailhead. The route uses a backcountry section of the Glenwood Horse Trail and passes many old mines.
The course climbs for approximately 1 mile on a dirt road, then climbs steeply for 0.3 miles onto the Glenwood Horse Trail. The remaining 5 miles are on the Glenwood Horse Trail and feature rolling terrain until the final 1.5 miles, which descends rapidly. Rock gardens appear around the 5 mile mark.
Parking at the park is limited and vehicle access is capped at 100 vehicles. Racers will be shuttled 4.1 miles to the start. The organizer notes that carpooling and close vehicle parking are encouraged. In the event of inclement weather, the race may be run as an out and back.
A virtual Mineshaft 10k option is available as a run anywhere entry and is listed as an RNUTS qualifying race. Virtual registrants receive a race shirt if registered by 01/02/2025; registrants after that date receive a Mountain Junkies LLC socks hoo rag instead.
