Trail Race Overview

The Mineshaft 10k is a trail event held in Buchanan, Virginia, utilizing sections of the Glenwood Horse Trail. The course follows a specific segment of the backcountry trail located between Bobletts Gap Road and the Bearwallow Trailhead. This route incorporates a portion of the Hellgate 100k course, specifically miles 47 through 52, but follows the path in the opposite direction.

The available event formats include:

  • 10 km trail race
  • 10 km virtual run
  • 10 km series bundle race

Course Details

The race begins with an approximately 1 mile climb on a dirt road. This is followed by a steep 0.3 mile ascent that leads onto the Glenwood Horse Trail. Participants remain on this trail for the final 5 miles of the course. The terrain features various elevations and passes by several historical mine sites. After a series of ascents and descents, the final 1.5 miles consist of a downhill section. Runners encounter rock gardens near the 5 mile mark of the route. In the case of inclement weather, the layout may be modified to an out and back format.

Logistics and Participation

Due to space constraints at the park, vehicle access is limited to 100 cars. Participants are transported from the parking area to the starting line via a shuttle, covering a distance of 4.1 miles. The virtual run option allows participants to complete the distance at any location while counting toward series qualification. Participants in the virtual event receive a race shirt if registered by the early deadline, or a branded headwear accessory if registered later.
