Event Overview
The Montvale Trail Races are an 18th edition event offering two trail running distances in Montvale Park. The races take place in February.
Race Details
The event features two distances:
- 8.4 miles
- 5 miles
Registration opens on December 18th. Participation is capped at 225 runners due to the park's size and limited parking. A virtual participation option is also available.
Course & Location
The race is held at Montvale Park in Bedford County. The park features a 6.5-mile trail system that winds through old-growth forest. The courses have been changed from previous years due to conservancy limits on a wetland area and the absence of a bridge. Both the 5-mile and 8.4-mile courses are run in a clockwise direction. The 8.4-mile course includes one water stop at a gravel parking lot. The race starts and finishes near a park pavilion.
Awards
Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers, the first male and female masters winners, and the top three in 13 age groups for both genders. Age groups range from 14 and under to 70 and up.
Important Rules
Dogs are not permitted. Race numbers must be visible on the front at all times. Amplified music or Bluetooth speakers are not allowed; personal music players with headphones are acceptable if runners remain aware. Participants must follow the marked trail and notify officials if they drop out.
Registration & Fees
Registration fees increase over several periods leading up to race day. The virtual race option costs $25 and includes a race shirt for registrants before a specified date, after which a different item is provided. The race is part of the RNUTS (Roanoke Non Ultra Trail Series). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
