Matthew Hazelton Memorial 5K
The event is a memorial 5K run with a 1-mile walk taking place on June 6, 2026 in Dunkirk, NY, at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center, 30 Lake Shore Drive E. The course starts and finishes behind the Clarion Hotel and is a USATF-certified route (certificate NY18039JG) with scenic views of Lake Erie. Free parking is available at the hotel.
The race is hosted by the Dunkirk Police Benevolent Association to fund a scholarship in the honored officer’s name for students planning to continue education in the criminal justice field and to raise awareness for ALS. The honoree served with the City of Dunkirk Police Department, including duties as a K-9 officer, and was active on the department dive team and special response team.
Logistics include on-site race day registration and packet pickup at the Clarion Hotel pavilion and an early packet pickup option at the hotel gazebo on the evening before the race. Participants who register by May 24, 2026 are guaranteed an official race shirt in their selected size; a limited number of extra shirts will be available afterward on a first-come, first-served basis. Entry fees are listed as $30 and $35 after April 30, 2026 for both the 5K and the 1-mile walk.
Professional timing and finish-line services use Jaguar Electronic RFID timing provided by Race Management Solutions. A post-race celebration and awards ceremony will take place at the pavilion with light food, snacks, and refreshments. Trophies are awarded to the first place overall male and female 5K finishers, and age-group awards are presented to the top three male and female runners in standard age divisions.
