Mackinac Island Eight Mile Road Race
The Mackinac Island Eight Mile Road Race celebrates its 55th anniversary as a summer-ending event on Michigan's Mackinac Island. This location is a unique destination accessible only by ferry, where motor vehicles are prohibited and travel is limited to foot, bicycle, carriage, or horse. The event hosts up to 1,800 participants for a race along the island's coastal roads.
The course begins in front of Mission Point Resort and follows the perimeter of the island in a clockwise direction. The first mile passes Victorian homes, the boat harbor, and various shops in the downtown area. The remainder of the route follows the shoreline along the Straits of Mackinac, offering views of the Mackinac Bridge and historic rock formations. The route is described as fast and flat, finishing at the water's edge on the lawn of the resort. High-top sneakers or specialized footwear may be beneficial, though the terrain is paved.
Available distances:
- 8 Mile Run or Walk
- Kids Fun Run (approximately 0.5 miles)
Participants receive a long-sleeve commemorative shirt and a finisher medal. While registration is open to all ages, walkers must complete the course within a 2.5-hour time limit to receive accurate scoring. Results are provided electronically, and awards are available for top finishers in various age divisions ranging from 12 and under to 85 and over.
The race is part of the Mackinac Island Trio Series. Participants who complete three specific events—either the Fort2Fort 5 Mile or the Lilac Festival 10K, plus the Mackinac Eight Mile and the Great Turtle Trail Race—are eligible for an additional series medal.
