Lyke Wake Walk - W to E guided and supported crossing
The Lyke Wake Walk was created in 1955 to cross the North York Moors at its widest and highest points. The route runs between Scarth Wood Moor near Osmotherley and Ravenscar on the North Sea coast. The organiser’s route is just under 39 miles across moorland within the North York Moors National Park. The original challenge walk requires walkers to travel between the markers within a maximum of 24 hours; groups on this guided crossing generally take 15 to 18 hours.
Crossings are guided and supported. Each open group is led by two guides so the group can be split by pace. Open groups have a maximum of 14 walkers, and commonly contain 10 to 12 participants. Participants are transferred by minibus to the opposite end of the walk before the crossing. Support provision includes water, unlimited sugar based snacks, blister plasters and a small surprise gift at the finish.
The organiser offers a full kit list and a training schedule and runs free training walks on the North York Moors, North Yorkshire coast and the Dales. A WhatsApp group is set up for each date to share training tips and participant information. Private guided groups can be arranged. Entry fees are listed at £140 per person with a £70 non refundable deposit and the balance due eight weeks prior to the crossing. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
