Living History Farms Race

The Living History Farms Race is an off-road event that covers 5 miles across three historic farm sites and through the 1876 town of Walnut Hill. The course runs over varied terrain, including streams, farm fields, and woodland trails, and passes animals on the museum grounds such as horses, cows, sheep, and pigs. Participants travel through settings meant to represent 300 years of local rural history.

All finishers receive a commemorative race shirt celebrating America 250 and a cowbell medal. A costume contest is held with awards for best individual, best group, and best patriotic or U.S. semiquincentennial costume. Competitive awards are given to the top male and female overall and to top male and female finishers in each age division. Registration is open to those aged 14 and older; age divisions begin at 14-19 and continue by decade up to 80 and over.

A free Kids’ Run takes place during the event with advance registration requested. Packet pick-up is offered in the days before the race at Fleet Feet Des Moines and at Living History Farms. For safety and course flow, participants who have not reached the halfway point within one hour may be asked to use the event sag wagon. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
