Event Overview

The Kettlebell Kountdown is a unique endurance competition held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama. The event follows an elimination format where participants aim to complete a total of 31 miles, effectively a 50 km distance. The race is organized around a one-mile loop that runners must navigate while carrying a weight.

Competition Format

The race consists of 31 individual laps, each measuring one mile. For every lap, participants must carry a 20-pound kettlebell. Runners must complete each loop within a specific time limit to remain in the competition. The time allowed for each lap decreases as the race progresses, starting at 30 minutes for the first lap and dropping to 16 minutes by the 30th lap. If a runner fails to finish a lap within the required time, they are eliminated. The final lap, lap 31, has no time limit; if multiple runners remain, the person who completes the final mile the fastest is declared the winner.

Kettlebell Rules

Participants must adhere to strict rules regarding the kettlebell:

  • At least one hand must be in contact with the kettlebell at all times.
  • The weight cannot be carried in bags, vests, or attached with ropes or tape.
  • Ropes, chains, or outside assistance for carrying the weight are prohibited.
  • The kettlebell may be rested on the ground, but it cannot be moved forward without being carried.

Logistics and Awards

The event provides the kettlebells for all participants; personal weights are not permitted. The race site at the Lakeside Pavilion offers space for crews to set up personal aid stations or tents. While water and light snacks are provided, runners are encouraged to bring their own specific nutrition. All participants receive a custom t-shirt, and those who complete all 31 laps receive a finisher medal. Custom kettlebells are awarded to the top three male and female finishers.
