Kettlebell Kountdown - Oak Mountain State Park, Pelham, AL
Kettlebell Kountdown is an elimination style 50K staged as 31 repeated one-mile laps. Each lap must be completed while carrying a 20 pound kettlebell with at least one hand in contact. The total distance is 31 miles, and the final lap has no time limit; only competitors who complete lap 31 receive an official finisher medal and are eligible for awards.
The event uses progressively tighter time limits for each one-mile lap. Failure to complete any lap within its designated time results in immediate elimination and removal from the course. If multiple runners reach the final lap, the fastest to complete that lap ranks higher.
Organizers supply a kettlebell for each runner and runners are not permitted to use a personal kettlebell. Carrying methods that attach the kettlebell to clothing or equipment, placing it in a bag, using ropes or chains, or throwing it are prohibited. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground but must pick it up to continue. Acceptable methods include carrying at the side, in front, behind, or resting on shoulder, chest, or upper back while maintaining hand contact; gloves are allowed provided they are not attached to the kettlebell.
The competition venue provides space for crew tents and personal aid at the start/finish area; crew may assist only in that area. No pacers are allowed on the course. Water and light snacks will be available but runners are responsible for their own aid. Packet pickup is at the Lakeside Pavilion near the south trailhead parking and a photo ID is required. No refunds are offered; entries may be transferred through the organizer. All participants must be 18 or older. Awards include a custom kettlebell for the top three male and top three female finishers with weights of 20 lb for first, 15 lb for second, and 10 lb for third. All finishers receive a custom t-shirt at packet pickup. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
