Event overview
The Kettlebell Kountdown is an elimination ultramarathon held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama. The competition totals 50K and uses a one-mile loop repeated 31 times. All participants must be 18 or older. Organizers provide a kettlebell for each runner and a custom t-shirt at packet pickup.
Course and format
Each lap is one mile on a clearly marked loop. For every completed lap the runner must carry a 20-pound kettlebell with at least one hand in contact with it at all times. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground during a lap but may not move it without picking it up. No ropes, chains, bags, vests, or other attachments are allowed. Outside assistance and pacers are not permitted on the course; crew may assist only in the start/finish area between laps.
Time limits for individual laps decrease as the event progresses; failure to complete a lap within its time limit results in elimination and the runner must return their kettlebell. There is no time limit for the final lap; if multiple runners start the final lap, the fastest finisher of that lap wins.
Awards and support
Only two divisions are contested: male and female. Top three finishers in each division receive custom kettlebells (1st: 20 lb, 2nd: 15 lb, 3rd: 10 lb). Competitors who complete lap 31 receive finisher medals. Organizers provide water and light snacks; runners are responsible for their own detailed aid and may set up at the start/finish area.
