Kettlebell Kountdown
Kettlebell Kountdown is an annual elimination ultramarathon held at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama. The event is a 50K distance composed of 31 one mile laps and is organized by The Running Birds. This edition is described as the third annual running of the event.
The competition format requires each runner to carry a 20 pound kettlebell for each one mile lap. Lap time limits decrease as the event progresses; a runner who fails to complete a lap within the allotted time is eliminated and may not return to the course. Only competitors who complete the thirty first lap receive an official finisher medal and are eligible for division awards.
Carrying rules require at least one hand in contact with the kettlebell at all times. The kettlebell may not be attached to ropes chains bags vests or other equipment and may not be thrown. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground during a lap but must pick it up to continue. Gloves are permitted provided they are not attached to the kettlebell.
On race day packet pickup is at the Lakeside Pavilion near the south trailhead parking inside the park. Organizers provide a kettlebell for each runner and a custom t shirt at pickup. The course is marked and the event is rain or shine. Crews may assist runners in the start finish area but may not provide aid on the one mile loop. No pacers are allowed on course. All participants must be 18 or older. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
