Kettlebell Kountdown - Pelham, AL
Kettlebell Kountdown is an elimination-style 50K held on a one-mile loop at Oak Mountain State Park. Competitors complete up to 31 laps, which total 31 miles. The course will be clearly marked and the event uses a repeated one-mile circuit format.
Each lap must be completed while carrying a 20 pound kettlebell with at least one hand in contact at all times. The organizer provides a kettlebell for each runner; personal kettlebells are not permitted. Certain methods of carrying are prohibited, including ropes, chains, bags, attachment to clothing, or throwing the kettlebell. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground but must pick it up to advance it. Gloves are allowed if they are not attached to the kettlebell.
There is a specific time limit for each one-mile lap that becomes shorter as the competition progresses. Failure to complete a lap within the time limit results in elimination from the race and the competitor must return the kettlebell at the pavilion. The final lap, lap 31, has no time limit; if multiple runners remain, the fastest finisher on that lap determines the top placings.
All participants must be 18 or older. Runners receive a custom t-shirt at packet pickup and finishers who complete lap 31 receive a finisher medal. The top three men and top three women who complete lap 31 the fastest receive custom kettlebell awards. Crews may assist runners in the start/finish area but pacers are not allowed on course. Water and light snacks will be available; runners are responsible for their own aid. The event runs rain or shine and a headlamp is recommended for later laps.
