Kettlebell Kountdown
The event takes place at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, with race day packet pickup at the Lakeside Pavilion near the south trailhead parking. There is no early packet pickup; runners receive a custom t-shirt at packet pickup and must show photo identification. All participants must be 18 or older.
The competition uses a clearly marked one mile loop. Competitors carry a 20 pound kettlebell for each completed lap. The full event totals 31 laps, equal to 31 miles or 50K. Time limits apply to each lap and the time allowed decreases as the competition progresses; failure to complete a lap within the time limit results in immediate elimination and the runner may not return to the course. Only competitors who complete lap 31 receive an official finisher medal, and only those finishers are eligible for awards.
Kettlebell rules require at least one hand in contact with the kettlebell at all times. Ropes, chains, bags, attachments to clothing, or throwing the kettlebell are prohibited. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground but must pick it up to advance. Organizers provide kettlebells and personal kettlebells are not allowed; all kettlebells must be returned at the end of a runner's participation.
There are two divisions, male and female. The top three finishers in each division receive custom kettlebell trophies: 20 pound for first, 15 pound for second, and 10 pound for third. Crew access and personal aid are allowed only in the start/finish area; no pacers are permitted on the course. Water and light snacks will be available and the event is held rain or shine; a headlamp is recommended for later laps. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
