Event overview
The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay is a fell running relay set in the Lake District fells. It is held annually in early October and is typically contested by about 70 teams, mostly from the north of England. The 2025 race was cancelled because of Storm Amy and forecasted winds of more than 70 mph on the fell tops; teams were offered refunds or transfers of entries to 2026. The event is run under a license from the Fell Runners Association and receives support for safety and communications from Cumbria Raynet.
Race format and entry
Teams consist of eight runners, with each leg run in pairs across four legs. The course includes hard climbs and steep descents on difficult terrain and requires careful navigation in poor weather; organisers expect competing clubs to field runners with navigation and mountain experience. Prizes are awarded across categories including Open, Ladies, Mixed and Vets teams. There is a strict limit on entries, currently set at 70 teams, and the event is often over-subscribed, with entry allocation involving invitation and vetting. The usual race base is in the Patterdale area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
