Hillbilly Hike Half Marathon, 10k, & Greubel Memorial 5k

The Hillbilly Hike is a multi-distance running event held primarily on the Summerset Trail in south-central Iowa. The trail is a former rail trail that is paved and traverses a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, wetlands, farmlands, and prairies. Participants can choose between several distances:

  • 13.1 Miles (Half Marathon)
  • 10K
  • 3.1 Miles (5K)
  • Virtual Race

The 13.1 Miles course is a point-to-point, USATF certified route with a net elevation drop of 200 feet. It starts near Indianola High School, winds through the campus, and enters the Summerset State Park before continuing to the finish line in Carlisle. Water stations are positioned every 2 miles.

The 10K is also a point-to-point race. Participants are transported by bus from Carlisle to the start line at Summerset State Park, then run back along the trail. The 3.1 Miles course is an out-and-back route starting near the finish line in Carlisle, utilizing the full width of the paved road before moving onto the trail. All courses are described as flat and accommodate walkers as well as runners.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the Thrive Church Mission Team and college savings plans. At the finish line in Carlisle, participants receive custom medals and have access to various food items, including biscuits and gravy, pie, and chocolate milk. Facilities such as portable restrooms and bag drop services are available at the start lines. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
