Event Overview
The FAM Turkey Trot is a community running and walking event held annually on Thanksgiving Day in West Des Moines. Established in 2012, this event serves as a fundraiser for the SHINE program at Blank Children's Hospital. Participants have the option to join the physical race or take part in a virtual version of the event from other locations.
The physical race takes place at Raccoon River Park. The course consists of a 3.1 mile loop around Blue Heron Lake. This event proceeds in various weather conditions and is designed for participants of different paces, including runners, joggers, and walkers. Registration allows for the formation of teams, which can be organized in memory of loved ones to raise funds.
Distance Options
- 5 km Walk/Run: A single loop around Blue Heron Lake.
- 5 km Virtual Race: A remote option for those outside the Des Moines area.
Participant Information
The event is managed as a small local race. There is no EMS stationed on-site, and water stations are limited to the finish area only. Participants are encouraged to prepare for the weather and coordinate with event staff if assistance is required.
In addition to the run, a raffle is held to support the SHINE program. Raffle tickets are available starting in mid-November and continuing through the day of the event. Winners do not need to be present during the drawing. For virtual participants, event shirts can be mailed for an additional fee, though delivery before the holiday depends on the registration date.
